Famicom/NES sprites are limited to 3 colors, but alright.

To an extent that is true, but more colors on a sprite can still be achieved by utilizing different layers. Mega Man 1-6 is a good example of this where the majority of the bosses (and even Mega Man himself) have colors going above the 3 color limit, ex. some bosses having 3 colors for the body and 2-3 colors for the face, adding up to 4-6 colors per sprite. Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 is also another strong example of sprites going way beyond the 3 color limitations, with some of the enemies having a whopping 6 to even 7 colors.

However, I should mention that adding more colors to a sprite in this case isn't done arbitrarily and instead depends on how you utilize the colors (ex. how you divide them on 8x8 tiles among other factors). So in theory, my sprites would still be possible on actual hardware with that in mind. I'm mostly just adding onto what you're saying though, as I also find this stuff really fascinating!
